Teacher Academy of Maryland

The Teacher Academy of Maryland
(TAM) is a CTE program designed for high school students interested in future careers as elementary, middle, and high school teachers. This program aligns with the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC). The Teacher Academy program requires students to successfully complete a four-course sequence beginning in the ninth grade year of high school. The program consists of four courses that focus on teaching as a profession, human growth, and development through adolescence, curriculum and instruction, and an internship.

Teaching as a Profession, the first course in the program is designed to introduce high school students to the current, historical, philosophical, and social perspectives of American education, including trends and issues. Students will explore the philosophies of education, school law, effective teacher behaviors, and more.

The second course in the program is Child and Adolescent Development. A cornerstone of good teaching is understanding the domains of development for children through adolescence and the impact of a variety of factors on their development.  Students will study the theories of human development through adolescence, the role of the family in child development, and the impact of schools on child development. Foundations of Curriculum and Instruction is the third course in the program. This course explores curriculum delivery models in response to the developmental needs of all children. Emphasis is placed on the development of varied instructional materials and activities to promote learning, classroom management strategies, and a supportive classroom environment. Students will explore methods for planning, instructional strategies, assessment, and more. The Teacher Academy Internship is the culminating course of the Teacher Academy program. Students will have an opportunity to integrate content and pedagogical knowledge in an educational area of interest. They will extend and apply their knowledge about teaching in a classroom setting under the supervision of a mentor teacher. They will also complete their working portfolio and present it for critique.

Successful completion of the program will prepare students for further education and careers in the education profession. Students also have the opportunity to earn course credits and/or scholarships at the following colleges and universities:

  • The Community Colleges of Baltimore County (CCBC)
  • Coppin State University
  • St. Mary’s College of Maryland
  • Salisbury University
  • Stevenson University
  • Towson University
