Towson, MD – Maja Durkovic, a Grade 12 student at Eastern Technical High School and president of the Maryland Association of Student Councils, has been selected as one of two Maryland students to participate in the 61st annual United States Senate Youth Program.

Designed as an educational experience for student leaders interested in public service careers, the program will be held in person in Washington, D.C., March 4 – 11, 2023. During the week, Durkovic and other student delegates will engage in an interactive leadership program, and each will receive a $10,000 college scholarship from the Hearst Foundation.

The week’s agenda will include meetings with leaders of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government. A highlight of the week is the USSYP Annual Senate Reception where student delegates speak with their U.S. senators. Throughout the week, military officers serve as mentors to support the student delegates.

Earlier this week, Durkovic learned that she also has been selected to serve as a page in the Maryland Senate in spring 2023.

In addition to her leadership of the Maryland Association of Student Councils, Durkovic is a council member of the Maryland Youth Advisory Council, co-founder of the Eastern Tech chapter of Maryland High School Democrats, legislative affairs coordinator of Baltimore County Student Councils, and a member of Eastern Tech’s National Honor Society, Social Studies Honor Society, National English Honor Society, Math Honor Society, and Tri-M Music Honor Society. Durkovic is enrolled in the Law and Public Policy Magnet Program at Eastern Tech.
