Baltimore, MD, February 23, 2017—
Mr. Patrick McConnell, Eastern Technical High School instructor in the Academy of Health Professions/Allied Health magnet program, was recently named February recipient of the monthly ABC2 News (WMAR) and MECU “Teachers are Heroes” Award. Funded by MECU and WMAR, the recipient is given $250 dollars to purchase classroom supplies. On February 17th, WMAR visited Mr. McConnell’s classroom to film him interacting with his students and to conduct an interview. The segment aired on both the morning and evening editions of WMAR local news on February 24th. In addition to his outstanding teaching of Anatomy and Physiology and courses required to become a Pharmacy Technician, McConnell advises a very active, service-oriented Skills USA chapter of over 100 students who organize and serve a community spaghetti dinner, all proceeds of which are donated to the No Kid Hungry Organization. Students also collect and donate over 1000 lbs. of food for donation to the local food bank.
In addition, McConnell recruits Skills USA members to tutor struggling elementary students in math and reading, and the entire 2nd Grade of one elementary school spends a day at Eastern Tech to attend student taught sessions on nutrition, proper hygiene, and oral care. During his interview, McConnell said of his award, “I am deeply honored that in a school full of hard-working, dedicated, and involved teachers, that I was selected to receive this award. I am lucky to work every day with such committed, caring, and invested young adults that I have as students.”
His colleague Amy Magladry (Allied Health), who nominated him, praised McConnell for his outstanding service to both school and community.
