Eastern Tech shines at Maryland MESA tournament

Maverick engineering students represent Baltimore County schools at state competition

Eastern Tech MESA Students 2017-2018On Saturday, May 5, 2018, selected students from schools across the state participated in the Maryland MESA (Math Engineering Science Achievement) challenge.

Eastern Tech Juniors and Seniors in the Engineering Careers program qualified for the state tournament in March and participated in several competitions each comprised of both rigorous skills showcase and a presentation element. Eastern Tech teams represented Baltimore County Public Schools at the State MESA tournament in three technology-based contests: Battleball, Cyber Robot, and National Engineering Design Competition (NEDC). The Battleball team, comprised of Gavin Bullinger, Leanna Pollicar, Sam Wilson and Leo Cha, took first place in their competition, as did the Cyber Robot team of Aislinn Marino, Jeffrey Cai, Ian Brady and Patryk Kurbiel. Additionally, the
NEDC team of Samantha Tang, Jeffrey Spencer, Hana Harwood and AJ Saquilayan took second place in their competition. Due to the overall quality of work and performance at the state competition, Eastern Tech was awarded the 2018 MESA High School Statewide Champion Award.

MESA coordinator and engineering teacher, Angela Waldrop, was not only proud of her students’ overall success, but also their collaborative efforts regarding “problem-solving skills, troubleshooting, interacting with a design team, and working with customers for their designs.” 

Senior, Samantha Tang, said of the event, “It feels really good to have another chance to compete at states. Of any extracurricular activity, I have participated in during my time at Eastern, this has definitely been my favorite and all of the hard work we have put in is paying off.” In a
ddition to overall team recognition, Tang was awarded the $3500 Maryland MESA Scholarship. Of her students’ efforts and awards, Waldrop added, “I am very proud of all the students’ hard work.  They combined their technical and design knowledge with the design thinking process in order to solve complex problems.”
