Eastern Tech MESA Students 2017On Monday, March 26, 2018, selected students from Baltimore County and Baltimore City schools participated in the Baltimore Regional MESA (Math Engineering Science Achievement) Competitions at Morgan State University, which consisted of four technology-based contests: Wood Bridge, Battleball, Cyber Robot and National Engineering Design Competition (NEDC).  Eastern Tech Juniors and Seniors in the Engineering Careers program participated in each of these four contests which are comprised of both a rigorous skills showcase and a presentation element. The team’s summative score in each of the competitive events earned them an invitation to the state MESA Competition, to be held May 5, 2018.

Eastern Tech
MESA coordinator and engineering teacher, Angela Waldrop, was not only proud of her students’ overall success, but also their collaborative efforts regarding “problem-solving skills, troubleshooting, interacting with a design team, and working with customers for their designs.”

At the state match, Maverick engineering students will compete with students from other counties for the Maryland MESA Championships. Senior, Samantha Tang, said of the event, “It feels really good to have another chance to compete at states and, potentially, nationals. Of any extracurricular activity, I have participated in during my time at Eastern, this has definitely been my favorite and all of the hard work we have put in is paying off.”

In a
ddition to overall team recognition, Eastern Tech’s NEDC team will be competing for a chance to represent the state of Maryland at the MESA Nationals to be held in June in Philadelphia. Waldrop added, “I am very proud of all the students’ hard work.  They combined their technical and design knowledge with the design thinking process in order to solve complex problems.

We are very much looking forward to participating in the State Competitions.”
